Verification of Contact Algorithm for Impact Problems with Numerical Manifold Method

Impact phenomenon is a complicated mechanical problems frequently encountered in our daily life, especially the military field. Numerical manifold method (NMM) novel numerical theory which proposed based on dual-topology to solve continuous-discontinues displacement field both static and dynamic problems. In present work, 3D-NMM program framework enriched with cover-based contact developed simulate impact Classic Taylor rod experiments different length-diameter ratios hitting velocities (150-250m/s) are systematic conducted ourselves code. The simulation shows that as speed increasing, plastic deformation of gradually increased, there also significant upsetting end. Otherwise, by comparing results NMM FEM, it observed result great agreement FEM’s within allowable error range. study successfully verified suitable for solving structural problems, very broad application prospect research value continuous-discontinuous mechanics.
